Quilting a Little More Gently

June 29, 2026|free motion quilting, quilting, sewing, supplies

Even though I’m a longarm quilter, I still love quilting on my domestic machine.

I learned to sew as a young girl, sitting next to my grandmother. She was patient, thoughtful, and always curious about how things worked. One thing she believed strongly in was finding better ways to do things, not harder ways. She loved tools, especially ones that made the work more comfortable, more accurate, or simply more enjoyable.

That mindset has stayed with me.

Back at the domestic machine

When I free-motion quilt on my domestic machine, I usually expect a little physical tension to come with it. A bit of shoulder tightness. Hands working harder than I’d like. It’s familiar, and I’ve learned to manage it.

When I tried the Martelli Quilting Hoops, I didn't know what to expect.

What I didn’t expect was how relaxed I felt.

Almost right away, I noticed my shoulders weren’t creeping up toward my ears like they usually do. My hands weren’t gripping or fighting the fabric. The quilt felt secure, and my movements felt smoother.

A small change that made a big difference

The hoop grips the quilt firmly without slipping, which meant I wasn’t constantly adjusting or overcorrecting. The handles kept my hands in a comfortable, natural position. Instead of managing the quilt, I could focus on the quilting and that is the fun part!

And that showed up in how long I could stay at the machine.

I quilted longer. I stayed looser. I wasn’t rushing to finish before the fatigue set in.

I couldn’t help but think my grandmother would’ve loved that.

She was never about flashy tools or gimmicks. She cared about working smarter, protecting your body, and enjoying the process. These hoops felt very much in that spirit.

Why I’m sharing this

I only ever share products I personally use and genuinely appreciate in my own studio. Not because they’re new or trendy, but because they make quilting feel better.

If you enjoy free-motion quilting on your domestic machine and want a more relaxed experience, the Martelli quilting hoops are worth a look. Martelli also has helpful videos on their website that show how the hoops work and what makes them different.

If you decide to try them, you can use JACKIEQUILTS for 10% off on the Martelli website.

(I do earn a small commission if you use the code, which helps me continue offering free tutorials and quilting resources,  thank you for supporting that work.) You can actually use the code JackieQuilts on any Martelli products for 10% discount.

Sometimes, the right tool doesn’t change what you do,  it changes how it feels to do it. And that can make all the difference.
